California is facing the worst drought in its history. On April 1, Governor Jerry Brown issued California’s first-ever mandatory water reductions to cut water use statewide by 25%. Based on Covina’s per-capita water use, the state determined that Covina, must reduce water consumption by 28% over the next year.

Covina's Water Conservation Ordinance includes the following Water Use Restrictions:  

 

  • Watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape, or other vegetated area with potable water is limited to Wednesday and Saturday, from April through October. During the winter months of November through March watering is limited to Wednesday only.
  • Watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape or other vegetated area with potable water is prohibited everyday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
  • Watering or irrigating of lawn, landscape, or other vegetated areas with potable water is limited to a maximum of 15 minutes per station per day.
  • No runoff is allowed from irrigation.
  • Washing down hard or paved surfaces, including but not limited to sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking areas, tennis courts, patios or alleys, is prohibited.
  • All leaks, breaks, and other malfunctions in the water user’s plumbing or distribution system must be repaired within forty-eight (48) hours of notification by the City unless other arrangements are made directly with the City.
  • Operating a water fountain or other decorative water feature that does not use recirculated water is prohibited.
  • Using water to wash or clean a vehicle is prohibited except by the use of a hand-held bucket or similar container, a hand-held hose equipped with a positive self-closing, shut-off nozzle or device, by high-pressure/low-volume wash systems, or at a commercial car washing facility that utilizes a recirculating water system to capture or reuse water.
  • Filling or refilling ornamental lakes or ponds is prohibited except to the extent needed to sustain aquatic life.
  • Refilling of more than one foot and initial filling of residential swimming pools or outdoor spas with potable water is prohibited.
  • Irrigating is prohibited during and within 48 hours following measureable rainfall.

Conserving water doesn't have to mean a major lifestyle change. It can be as simple as taking a shorter shower or turning off the water while you brush your teeth. Learn more easy ways to conserve 20 gallons a day. To monitor your water usage online, register your Covina Water account at: https://covina.gwfathom.com. Here are some simple tips that can help you save water around your home.

 Indoors

  1. Install a water efficient faucet aerator and turn off water when shaving or brushing your teeth. Saves 5 gallons per day.
  2. Install a low-flow showerhead and take 5 minute showers. Saves 5 gallons per day.
  3. Use only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher. Saves 9 gallons per day.

Outdoors

  1. Water your yard only in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation and use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks.  Saves 25 gallons per day.
  2. Install a 'smart' sprinkler controller in your yard. Saves up to 47 gallons per day.
  3. Replace large turf areas with drought tolerant plants. Saves up to 60 gallons per day.
  4. Fix leaky faucets, plumbing, and sprinklers. Saves up to 500 gallons per month.

All rebates offered to our customers do not come directly from Covina Water Department. They are offered through Metropolitan Water District. As a member agency of MWD, our customers qualify for all rebates offered. For current rebate information please visit www.socalwatersmart.com. Please note Metropolitan Water District of Southern California announced in July 2015 that it will be closing its turf rebate program to new applicants. All funds for turf removal have been exhausted .
