Green Building Standards Adopted
To promote the conservation of California’s precious resources, the 2010 California Green Building Code was established by the California Building Standards Commission.
The Covina Council’s adoption of these standards introduces a new emphasis on “green” or “sustainable” development for projects within the City.
In sustainable development, materials and construction methods that were typically avoided due to increased start-up costs are replaced with eco-friendlier options which benefit the project and community in the long run. For example, traditional construction methods allowed heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and fire suppression equipment to operate with cheaper and readily available chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), halon, and hydrochlorofluorcarbon (HCFC) gases. Today, there is significant evidence indicating that these methods potentially contribute to global warming and ozone depletion. The new green building standards specifically restrict the use of CFC, halon, and HCFC gases in new commercial and industrial systems.
The City of Covina wants to help with questions on green building and sustainable practices. Staff members trained and certified by the United States Green Building Council as associate professionals on Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards are available during regular business hours.
